Our Neighborhoods

Explore the unique characters of the 4 historic district of Willemstad.

Otrobanda

Otrobanda is located in front of Punda, on the other side of the St. Annabaai. The name Otrobanda literally means ‘the other side’ in Papiamentu. Otrobanda is home to the Kura Hulanda museum (Slavery museum), and the Fort established in 1828, called Riffort. When strolling through the district you will notice that Otrobanda has a wider set up than Punda. You will also immediately find out why the locals call it the cultural heart of Willemstad. The bright colored houses and various large murals give the district a cheerful look, which is worth a visit.

Scharloo

Scharloo is a beautiful district in Willemstad with stately mansions built in Caribbean style with bright colors. The architecture of these mansions is more refined than the Dutch mansions in Punda. It has more complicated constructions and more decorative work. The unique architecture with a lot of art murals made by local and international artists make Scharloo remarkably fascinating. You will find beautiful renovated buildings next to ruins, which make this district even more interesting to wander through.

Pietermaai

Pietermaai is a perfect combination of the old and the new with a lively atmosphere during the evenings. If you are looking for good dining, nightlife and entertainment, Pietermaai is the must-visit. The district is a 10 min walk from the Handelskade and therefore very conveniently located. The illuminated streets, good atmosphere and live music during the evenings make this district worth a visit.

Punda

One of the most beautiful inner cities of the world and the oldest district of Willemstad. The streets of Punda are full of life and color. The wide variety of shops, restaurants and cafes will make you fall in love with our dushi Punda. Every Thursday night Punda Vibes is hosted for a pleasant evening of shopping, live music, great local shows and good food with family and friends.
